Bicycle and Pedestrian Action Committee (BI-PAC)
for East St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana

Slidell and Pearl River citizens have verbalized their desire and need for a transportation system where walking & bicycling is a safe & convenient mode for work, play & urban trips. Connecting Slidell & Pearl River neighborhoods to schools, churches, parks, businesses, and towns of Lacombe, Mandeville, Abita Springs, and Covington via the Tammany Trace and the  is a recurring theme among our residents.

Research shows that bicycle, walking routes, paths, and parks improve the quality of life.  East St Tammany citizens seem to think so and want to have better access to these transportation modes across the parish.

BI-PAC will raise public awareness; educate motorists, cyclists, & walkers regarding their rights & responsibilities when sharing a roadway by leading a monthly bike ride, last Sunday of the month @ 4 pm, Bayou Lane in front of Heritage Park in East St Tammany. The monthly route will be determined by the emerging leader who wishes to "show the way" for new cyclists who may need the confidence of riding with a group. Experienced cyclists are asked to join the group ride to show support because there is greater awareness in numbers.

BI-PAC wants “Share the Road” signs, pavement markers on and flashing lights at dangerous intersections, bridges, alerting motorists & cyclists & encouraging cooperative behavior

BI-PAC advocates a “both/and” option- shared roadways  until stand alone paths can be designed into Slidell's Master Plan. By designating "Share the Road" routes cyclists and walkers will be safer than biking or walking on roads and highways that are not marked

BI-PAC envisions a greenway or an interurban corridor through South Louisiana. By connecting New Orleans via the Rigolettes ane the Rigolettes to Heritage Park's proposed Trailhead where the Tammany Trace will terminate; cyclists can access the Tammany Trace through Slidell, Lacombe, Mandeville, Abita Springs, and Covington- an interurban corridor. Madisonville would be the last city to connect in St Tammany parish. The corridor could continue to Baton Rouge
