East St Tammany Share the Road Routes
To
Slidell Heritage Park “Proposed” Trailhead

St Tammany Parish has purchased Camp Salmen, another link in connecting Slidell and Pearl River to the Tammany Trace, which currently terminates at Neslo Drive, across from the NorthShore Square Mall.

Steve Stefancik, Council District 11, announced plans for a proposed Camp Salmen Park which would bring Slidell a little closer to accessing the Tammany Trace; thus, completing the St Tammany interurban greenway, by connecting Slidell, Pearl River, Lacombe, Mandeville, Abita Springs and Covington. One missing link will be to connect Madisonville to the Tammany Trace, at some point.

BI-PAC’s primary goal, at this time, is to advocate for residents of East St Tammany who want to access the Tammany Trace via Share the Road Routes linking residents from East Slidell and Pearl River via roads that bear signage with pavement markers, and blinking lights at dangerous intersections.

These signs, pavement markers and blinking lights will alert motorists that they are driving along with cyclists exercising their right to the roadway. The Louisiana Revised Statues state that a single cyclist must ride on the right side of the road with traffic or two abreast across the lane. Cyclists do not intend to “block traffic” they want to be part of the traffic, even if they travel at slower speeds.

This map posts 5 color-coded, east to west routes and 2 south to north routes to Heritage Park’s proposed Trailhead. The legend rates bike route difficulty, A route (dashed lines) as most difficult with no shoulders while B route (dashed-doted lines) are routes with shoulders and/or sidewalks which are moderately difficult. Schools are flagged and parks are shaded green.

Once these roads are striped and signs posted, a cyclist can consult this map to determine their route to Olde Town, parks, schools and eventually the Tammany Trace.
